Breaking news: Samsung Note 20+ LTPO TFT display technical name is “HOP”

Source: IT House

Foreign media SamMobile reported that sources said that Samsung will allow (part of) the Galaxy Note 20 series mobile phones to be equipped with cutting-edge LTPO display technology with variable refresh rate, which will be called "HOP". The nickname is said to come from the names of mixed oxides and polysilicon, and mixed oxides and polysilicon are the two key materials of Samsung's thin film transistor (TFT) backplane. Conceptually, HOP will be of great significance for the application of LTPO TFT backplanes on smartphones. However, Apple and Samsung have already commercialized this technology in the field of smart watches, and Apple Watch 4 and Galaxy Watch Active 2 are equipped with LTPO display technology.

Apple is actually the owner of LTPO's original patent, which means that Samsung will have to pay royalties for its expanded use. According to the same report, although LG produced the LTPO TFT panel used in the 2018 Apple Watch 4, once this technology is introduced to the iPhone 13 in 2021, it will be produced by Samsung.

LTPO is an abbreviation of "low temperature polycrystalline oxide", which is a display backplane technology that can dynamically change the refresh rate of compatible TFT panels. In fact, this is a considerable energy-saving basic technology, especially in cases such as the Galaxy Note 20 series and its constantly bright display. More specifically, it is said that its efficiency is 20% higher than the previous LTPS backplane. The Samsung Galaxy Note 20 series will not completely abandon the latter. According to sources, only the Galaxy Note20+ will use the new LTPO TFT platform, HOP.

On the other hand, there are rumors that the conventional Galaxy Note 20 does not support the 120Hz refresh rate, so its battery life will not significantly deteriorate in practical applications. The highly anticipated Galaxy Note 20 series is expected to be launched on August 5, and should be available in most parts of the world in early September.
