On Tuesday, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office approved a patent application called “short wave infrared optical imaging through electronic device display screen”. In this patent, apple proposed a method of fingerprint identification using short wave infrared optical imaging, which can be regarded as Apple’s touch ID technology.

Apple pointed out that the optical imaging system could be placed near the display, but this could make the frame thicker than the designer expected. Instead, Apple’s optical imaging system is located below the main display stack, which typically consists of an external protective layer, a touch sensitive layer, and the display itself.

Apple’s patent is different from the current popular under screen fingerprint recognition. Its method is: the optical imaging system will emit short wave infrared light upward, and the short wave infrared light will interact with the finger, and reflect the light according to the existence of ridge line contacting the screen. The reflected infrared light is then received by the photosensitizers in the same optical imaging system, which can present a part of the fingerprint for analysis.

In addition, since the display will be used to emit visible light instead of infrared light, and the photosensitive element will be adjusted to detect infrared light, the system will not have false alarm or reading failure due to different light sources, and the accuracy will be greatly improved

In fact, it has been reported that apple is secretly developing an iPhone equipped with off-screen fingerprints. Judging from the patents they have applied for one after another, the technology is also constantly improving and maturing. Therefore, it is not too surprising to launch such an iPhone.
