Research institution: Samsung shows mass production of LTPO mobile phone screens this year and is expected to supply iPhone 13 next year

IT House June 17th news research organization Omdia recently released a report that in 2020 Samsung will produce low-temperature polysilicon and oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) flexible OLED displays for the Galaxy Note 20 series, and may also be Apple next year. Samsung Display has developed its own LTPO TFT in order to improve power consumption, and recently named its LTPO technology as mixed oxide and polysilicon (HOP) TFT.

Samsung Electronics launched 1.2 and 1.4-inch flexible OLED Galaxy Watch Active 2 with LTPO TFT in 2019, and proved that LTPO TFT wearable device battery life is better than LTPS. In 2020, Samsung Electronics will use LTPO technology to produce flexible OLED displays for its new Galaxy Note 20 series, which means that Samsung’s LTPO technology will be used in 6.x-inch smartphones.

Apple also used LTPO TFT technology to produce flexible OLEDs for the Apple Watch Series 4 in 2018, which greatly improved battery life. Recently, Apple plans to use LTPO TFT technology to produce flexible OLEDs for its iPhones in 2021 with Samsung Display, LG Display, JDI, BOE and other display manufacturers. LTPO TFT may become the key technology of OLED manufacturing.

  LTPO can significantly save power consumption  

LTPO TFT is a combination of oxide TFT and polysilicon TFT. It has the advantages of two TFT technologies. LTPS is the best TFT technology for operating OLED displays with high electron mobility, but it also has the highest off-state leakage current. Oxide is the best TFT technology for operating OLED displays with lower off-state leakage current, but its electron mobility is lower.

The high leakage current of LTPS TFE will reduce the brightness of the picture with time, so every frame needs to write the driving voltage. On the other hand, the low leakage current of LTPO only needs to write the driving voltage in the first frame when the screen is not moving. Therefore, LTPO TFT can be used like LTPS to display mobile content that needs to quickly change the state of the pixel circuit, such as movies and games. It can also be used as an oxide circuit to display static content such as pictures or clocks. The state of this type of display pixel circuit changes slowly.

  LTPO TFT will become the key technology of OLED manufacturing  

Most mobile device brands focus on improving the battery life of the device, because they need to continuously increase the size and function of the display, such as 5G communication, multiple cameras and security sensors. Therefore, in order to meet the requirements of mobile device brands, power consumption is becoming more and more important for display manufacturers.

In theory, LTPO TFT can save 5-15% of operating power consumption compared to LTPS TFT. However, the production of LTPO TFT requires more equipment investment and the cost is higher than that of LTPS TFT. Therefore, panel manufacturers are concerned about how to reduce additional equipment investment without the problem of overcapacity.
